What is a part-time job?

The Second job is also referred to as secondary employment and is carried out in addition to full-time employment in return for remuneration. Remuneration of this kind is also referred to as additional income or supplementary income.

Who can have a part-time job?

Anyone who already has a full-time job can take on a part-time job. Those people for whom one income is not yet sufficient and who have the time to do so opt for a part-time job. The following groups of people, among others, can take on a part-time job:

  • Civil servants
  • Member of Parliament
  • Judge

What things do part-time workers need to think about?

Before deciding to take on a part-time job, it is important to read the employment contract for your main job. There are often regulations on the subject of part-time work. There may not be a clause on this in the employment contract. In this case, it is not necessary to inform your main employer of your plans.

If the main employer believes there is a risk that the employee's performance could suffer as a result of the second job, they can prohibit the employee from taking up the employment. This is possible, for example, if the second job takes place in a discotheque and lasts until shortly before the start of the working hours of the main job.
